You need to dilute the acid because it is heavier than water. Pour one gallon of the acid into a 5 gallon bucket, fill the bucket with 4 gallons of water, and dilute the acid in the bucket of water before pouring into the tub. However, if the alkalinity of your tub is very high, you will need to use 1 or 2 gallons of muriatic acid. To lower the pH, you will probably use between 2 and 5 cups of hydrochloric acid. Lowering the alkalinity of water: lowering your tub’s alkalinity requires more acid than when you want to lower the pH level. There are different applications for muriatic acid when it comes to the chemistry of pool water. Neither is it dangerous, but should be handled with extreme care, especially during the process of applying it in the pool. Muriatic acid is a solution that contains only 31% hydrochloric acid (HCl).
